Industrial Biotechnology for Improved Manufacture of Medicinal Alkaloids PhD Scholarship

You must have one of: recently completed a bachelor degree with first-class honours a masters degree an equivalent from an overseas institute. Your previous study must have focused on a relevant discipline, like: molecular biology biochemistry chemistry biotechnology. You should have a strong interest and experience in enzyme biochemistry and development. Background This PhD project will specifically involve research to discover, characterize, optimize and express a key enzyme in the production pathway. The project will investigate fundamental scientific questions while maintaining a strong industry focus. The overall project aims to develop a new semi‐synthetic route for the manufacture of codeine. Codeine is manufactured by the chemical conversion of poppy‐derived morphine, which is low-yielding and environmentally unfriendly. Two enzymes will be investigated and optimised, and an innovative bioreactor to achieve high yield will be developed. The resulting industrial biotransformation will provide a greener and cheaper process for increased global access to codeine. Australian opiate manufacturing is expected to benefit from value-adding and increased flexibility introduced by a biotechnology approach.
