Information for students regarding COVID-19

Last updated: 4:35pm Friday 15 May 2020

Study Queensland (SQ), a unit within Trade and Investment Queensland, is responsible for implementing the International Education and Training Strategy to Advance Queensland 2016 – 2026 (IET Strategy). Study Queensland connects with stakeholders across the International Education and Training (IET) sector to support international students, their educators and the eco-system of businesses and organisations that together form the 'student experience'.

Global outbreaks of novel coronavirus (hereafter COVID-19) in 2020 are severely upsetting many students' lives and disrupting the operations of organisations across the world. Many Queensland businesses and their overseas partners continue to feel the impacts. Study Queensland would like to express sympathy and support for those who have been affected by COVID-19.

Keeping our distance but staying together is our way of getting through the #COVID-19 pandemic. As we adapt to new lifestyles and social changes, we must remember that we aren’t alone. Help and support is available whenever and wherever you need it. Watch here to learn more.

A message to friends and family

Stay safe, stay in touch and be patient. Our borders aren't open, which is why our lines of communication must be. Continue the circle of communication with our close family and friends, keeping our loved ones updated on our situation. We are in this together and will get through this together. Reach out regularly and close the distance between you, your family and friends.

Looking after your mental health while isolated

Your mental health and wellbeing is important in this unprecedented time. Take some time out of your day to acknowledge your feelings. How you tried new ways of adapting to studying, socialising or other activities? Ask your family and friends on how they are adjusting to the new new way of life. The more you speak out and reach out, the closer you will get to finding your own routine.

Stay together and look out for each other, we are #InThisTogether #COVID19

Managing #COVID-19 involves staying proactive and positive in following regulations and restrictions. Share the right information and updates with close family members and friends. This is how you can play your part in looking out for each other but also keeping the distance.

Keeping social while distancing! #InThisTogether #COVID19

Technology has become an even more important tool in our lives while we all play our part in social distancing. This is the time and opportunity for us to learn, utilise and innovate the technological space for better social and collaboration online. Staying together by staying digitally connected will help us stay safe and confident during #Covid-19.

Study Queensland Luhrmann Appeal

Study Queensland Luhrmann Appeal

The Study Queensland Luhrmann Appeal was established in an effort to further support international students in Queensland impacted by COVID-19.

Supported by the Queensland Government, the Study Queensland Luhrmann Appeal is a campaign designed to support international students, and was launched by Lilly Luhrmann - daughter of Australian film legend, Baz Luhrmann. The Appeal is a partnership between Study Queensland, charity 'warehouse' GIVIT and the Queensland Care Army, and calls on those who can to donate a variety of goods.

Students can access support and goods donated to the Study Queensland Luhrmann Appeal by:

  • Booking an online appointment with a student support officer from the Queensland Student Hub here; or
  • Connecting with a support organisation registered with GIVIT. To find a support organisation in your area, please visit the GIVIT website here and click “Find an Organisation”.

Queensland International Student Crisis Assistance Package

The Queensland Government has more than tripled its support for students, boosting its state-wide international education assistance and recovery package to $15 million.

As part of this package, an additional $10 million was made available to support international students experiencing severe financial hardship as a result of COVID-19. The package complements a range of relief programs already introduced by the Queensland Government, universities, education and training providers and local communities to support students during this difficult time.

As part of this package the Queensland Government provided:

  • one-off financial grants of $500 to eligible international students studying at VET, ELICOS and private colleges in Queensland
  • distributed funding to large education and training providers, to top up their financial hardship funds
