I decided to come to Australia in 2014. After researching the country and the main cities, I found that Brisbane had a promising future so I wanted to be a part of the development of this city. I considered the balance between the population, opportunities, and the higher pay rate for jobs was exceptional. In addition, it has beautiful beaches nearby and great weather. For those reasons, I picked Brisbane as the place where I would like to start my new life in a new country and achieve my dreams.
While I was studying English I had tried many different ways to find a job and failed, I had to think in new ways to look for employment. I started to talk with my classmates and people who were around me. Surprisingly, in a short time, I found my first job in a nightclub cleaning, then a job in a restaurant and it was in that instant that I understood the importance of the social interaction with people. I started to help more people through the people who had helped me and I realised that this is something that everyone should do when they come to Australia no matter their level of English: take risks and just do it!
After I finished my English course, I started a VET course in Queensland International Institute where
I put my networking skills to the test. I became a member of QiiSA (Queensland International Institute Student Association) where I gained professional experience, met wonderful people from different areas and learned new things.
During this year, I have found various internships in marketing and represented Colombia as an Ambassador for International Students in Brisbane. There is no doubt that this is the best thing that has happened to me in my three years in Australia. As a result, I have built a great social and professional network, shared my personal experiences, attended to different events around Brisbane and met the most amazing people. I have also volunteered in events with MDA, Brisbane Festival and Rugby League World Cup. My participation has allowed me to make professional connections that I am sure will be able to support me during my journey.
