“When you travel abroad, you become culturally rich. You get a little bit of other cultures, and you build that as a part of yourself.”

Camila never expected to become a chef. Originally from Brazil, she was studying to become a pilot until life changed her trajectory. “Once I lost my hearing, I had to reinvent myself,” she says. “I had to think: what are the things that I like? What can I do now that still makes me happy?”

She turned to food, which had always been part of her identity. “It’s something I grew up with culturally in my house, especially with my mom,” she says. “I thought, why not do something that I really, really love?”

Now studying cookery on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia Camila is building a new life and a new future on her own terms.

“I’ve learned environmental management in every possible landscape: forest, jungle, desert and ocean. I feel prepared to apply my skills in any environment.”

When Pauline Ramos Bessa Rebollar left Mexico for Queensland, she wasn’t just pursuing a degree. She was stepping closer to her dream career in sustainability. Studying Environmental Management in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia offered her exactly the experience she was looking for.

As part of her studies, Pauline travelled to Indonesia to work on a peatland restoration project, while also learning about community engagement and environmental testing. Closer to home, she surveyed coral bleaching on Heron Island and tackled contamination management with a start-up in Singapore.

After graduation, Pauline hopes to build on her industry experience by working in Queensland. “I did a placement at the Department of Energy, working on energy transition. That opened the door to building my professional network here.”
