Adventure and ambition go hand in hand for Andres Camilo Rodriguez Avila. Leaving Colombia behind, he set out for Brisbane, Queensland, Australia – eager to challenge himself in a new environment. Studying in Brisbane wasn’t just about learning a language; Camilo wanted to take his career to the next level.
“My dream is to improve all my skills, to be a better professional in my country and abroad,” he says.
Camilo has found Brisbane to be an incredibly welcoming place. “People here are so kind and friendly,” he notes. “They are always willing to help, and that makes it easier to adjust.”
One of the biggest highlights for him has been the city’s diversity. “One of the most important things about Brisbane is the culture surrounding it,” he shares. “It’s a place where you meet people from all over the world.”
“When you travel abroad, you become culturally rich. You get a little bit of other cultures, and you build that as a part of yourself.”
Camila never expected to become a chef. Originally from Brazil, she was studying to become a pilot until life changed her trajectory. “Once I lost my hearing, I had to reinvent myself,” she says. “I had to think: what are the things that I like? What can I do now that still makes me happy?”
She turned to food, which had always been part of her identity. “It’s something I grew up with culturally in my house, especially with my mom,” she says. “I thought, why not do something that I really, really love?”
Now studying cookery on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia Camila is building a new life and a new future on her own terms.
